A safe cycle route is a route where cyclists can travel on cycle lanes that are dedicated to cyclists and clearly separated from other traffic by solid barriers.
This IS a safe cycle lane

The cycle lane is separated from the motor vehicle lanes by a permanent concrete curb.
The cycle lane is a different colour or shade than the motor vehicle lanes.
This is NOT a safe cycle lane

The cycle lane has no solid separation from the motor vehicle lanes. There’s nothing to prevent motor vehicles entering the cycle lane.
The cycle lane is the same colour or shade as the motor vehicle lanes. It’s not always clear to motor vehicle drivers that there is a cycle lane.
